What it actually costs to write a book with AI
Everyone quotes the subscription. Almost nobody quotes the underlying cost, which is a few tens of cents. The gap between those two numbers explains most of how this category is priced, and it is worth understanding before you pay anyone anything.
Short answer
The raw model cost of writing and line-editing a 12-chapter, 15,000-word book is about 38 cents at current rates: roughly 3 cents a chapter to write, another 3 to edit, plus a few cents for the interview, the outline and the cover. Tools charge between $9 once and $600 a year for the same underlying work, so what you are really choosing between is what they do with the output.
The measured numbers
These are not estimates. They are the token counts from a production run of books across English, French, Portuguese, Indonesian and Malayalam, priced at the rates open-weight models were charging in 2026: about $1.30 per million tokens in, $2.60 per million out.

The striking line is the second one in the chapter pair: editing costs slightly more than writing. The draft is one pass; the edit re-reads the whole chapter and rewrites it against a style guide, so it pays for the input tokens twice. Any tool that skips the edit halves its cost and keeps the tells.
Language changes the number
Tokenisers are trained mostly on English text, so English words are efficient and everything else is not. A word of French or Portuguese costs a little more than an English one. A word of Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam or Arabic costs roughly twice as much, because the script is split into more pieces.
In practice a book in Malayalam costs close to double the same book in English, and takes noticeably longer to generate, for exactly the same number of words on the page. It is the one input cost that varies enough to notice.

Against a floor of about 38 cents, the category prices like this:

The honest way to read this table: past the API row, you are not buying tokens. You are buying whether the thing at the end is a book or a pile of chapters.
Where the real cost is
Four things separate 15,000 words from a book, and none of them is the writing.
- Getting your material in. A model with nothing but a title writes what is already on the first page of a search. A model with your error, your number and your customer writes something only you could have written. That is an interview, and it has to happen before the outline.
- Consistency across distance. Three good chapters are easy. Chapter eleven remembering what chapter two set up is the hard part, and it is what most tools quietly do not do.
- The edit. Machine prose has a fingerprint: the reversal, the tricolon, the rhetorical question answered by a slogan, bold text inside paragraphs. Removing it is a second pass over every chapter, and it is why the edit line above costs more than the draft.
- The files. A valid EPUB 3, a print-ready PDF at a real trim size with the right margins, a DOCX an editor can mark up, and a paperback interior a printer will accept. This is unglamorous and it is the part nobody can produce from a chat window.
What this means for how you should pay
If the words cost 38 cents, then a per-book price is honest and a subscription is a bet on your own future productivity. Most people writing a book write one book. How much does it cost in tokens to write a book with AI?
For a 12-chapter book of about 15,000 words, roughly 38 cents at 2026 open-weight model prices. A chapter costs about 3 cents to draft and about 3 more to line-edit; the interview, the outline, the front matter and a cover image add another 5 cents or so between them.
Why do AI book tools charge so much more than that?
Because the tokens are the cheapest part. The cost sits in everything around them: the interview that gets your material in, the outline, the consistency machinery, the line-editing pass, the cover, the EPUB and print-ready PDF, the support, and the people. A tool that only forwarded your prompt to a model would indeed be worth about 38 cents.
Does writing in another language cost more?
Yes, sometimes twice as much. Tokenisers are built around English, so a word of Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi or Arabic costs roughly twice the tokens of an English one, and languages in non-Latin scripts can go higher. The same book costs more to write, and takes longer, in those languages.
Is a subscription or a one-off payment better?
A one-off payment if you are writing one or two books; a subscription only pays for itself past roughly one book a month. Most people who buy a subscription to write a book write one book.
Does a longer book cost proportionally more?
Almost exactly. The per-chapter cost is flat, so a 24-chapter novel costs about twice a 12-chapter guide. The fixed costs — interview, outline, cover, front matter — are only a few cents and do not scale.
