How long is a romance novel?
Romance readers know the expected lengths and say so in reviews. Missing the number is survivable; missing it without saying so is not.
Short answer
Contemporary romance is 70,000 to 90,000 words. Category romance is 50,000 to 60,000. Historical and romantasy run longer, 90,000 to 120,000. Under 50,000 is a novella and should be labelled and priced as one. The mistake that costs you is not writing short, it is calling a 35,000-word book a novel.
Targets by subgenre
| Subgenre | Words | Approx. pages |
|---|---|---|
| Category romance | 50,000 to 60,000 | 200 to 240 |
| Contemporary romance | 70,000 to 90,000 | 280 to 360 |
| Romantic suspense | 80,000 to 100,000 | 320 to 400 |
| Historical romance | 90,000 to 110,000 | 360 to 440 |
| Romantasy | 100,000 to 150,000 | 400 to 600 |
| Novella | 15,000 to 50,000 | 60 to 200 |
Page counts assume roughly 250 words to a printed page, which is the usual rough conversion for trade paperback.
What goes wrong when a draft comes in short
A short romance draft is almost never short because scenes are missing from the ending. It is short because the middle was skipped. The symptoms are consistent:
- The couple goes from hostile to close across one chapter break.
- Secondary characters are mentioned but never get a scene.
- The setting is established once and never participates again.
- The dark moment arrives before the reader believes the relationship.
The fix is adding scenes in the second quarter, not padding the ones you have.
A worked example, honestly
We planned a 21-chapter contemporary romance and it came in at 34,328 words, averaging 1,634 a chapter against a 2,000 target. That is a short novel by genre standards, close to novella territory, and the honest options are the same ones you have:
- Label it a novella and price it accordingly. Costs nothing, loses no readers.
- Add chapters in the middle, where the escalation is thinnest, not at the end.
- Leave it and say so. At a low price, a short book that is clearly described is a reasonable product. At full novel price it is not.
What you should not do is call it a novel and hope. Genre readers count, and the review that says "this is a novella not a novel" does more damage than the length ever would have.
Planning to hit the number
Decide chapters and chapter length before drafting, then check the arithmetic. Twenty-eight chapters at 2,800 words is 78,000, comfortably inside contemporary range. Twenty-one at 1,600 is 34,000, which is a novella whether you intended one or not. The number is set at the planning stage, not discovered at the end.
Neubook Write asks how many chapters you want and plans the arc to fit, so the length is a decision rather than a surprise.

Common questions
How many words is a typical romance novel?
Between 70,000 and 90,000 for a standalone contemporary romance. That is roughly 280 to 360 printed pages.
Is 50,000 words enough for a romance novel?
It is enough for a category romance, the shorter line-based format, and it is a normal length for that market. As a standalone contemporary sold as a novel it will read as thin to genre readers.
What counts as a romance novella?
Broadly 15,000 to 50,000 words. Novellas sell well in romance, particularly in series and as entry points, but they must be labelled. Readers do not object to a novella, they object to paying novel prices for one.
How long should chapters be?
Most contemporary romance runs 1,500 to 3,000 words a chapter. Shorter chapters suit alternating point of view and read faster, which is a real advantage in a genre where many readers finish a book in one or two sittings.
Does length affect price?
It affects expectation more than price. A 35,000-word book at a novella price is fine. The same book at full novel price, labelled as a novel, produces the review that kills a listing.
