How many words should a book be?

There is a right answer for each kind of book and it is narrower than people expect. Too short reads as thin, too long costs you money on every printed copy, and both are easy to avoid once you know the band you are aiming at.

Short answer

A novel runs 70,000 to 100,000 words, a novella 20,000 to 50,000, a practical guide 25,000 to 45,000, a self-help book 40,000 to 60,000, a lead magnet 3,000 to 8,000, and a picture book 500 to 1,000. Length matters commercially for two reasons: a paperback is charged per page to print, and readers judge thinness by the spine before they read a line.

The bands

These are reader expectations, not rules. Break them deliberately and say so on the cover — "a short book about X" is a promise people like — but breaking them by accident is how a book gets returned.

What books actually come out at

From a few hundred finished books, the averages land close to the bands above and a little short at the top end:

The honest reading of that table: generated drafts come in at the lower end of every band, and picture books come in well over, because a model asked for 120 words a page will happily write 250. Both are worth checking before you publish. A word count shown against a target while you write is the cheapest way to catch it.

Why length costs money

For an ebook, length is free. For a paperback it is not: printing is charged as a fixed amount plus an amount per page, so every page you add comes out of your royalty on every copy you ever sell.

Roughly, at US rates, a 200-page black-and-white paperback costs a little over $3 a copy to print. A 400-page one costs closer to $5.50. At a $9.99 list price and a 60% royalty you clear about $2.80 on the first and about $0.45 on the second. The longer book earns a sixth as much per copy, and most readers will not have noticed the difference.

Amazon also requires at least 24 pages and an even page count, and has an upper page limit that varies with trim size and paper. Colour interiors cost several times what black and white does, which is the real constraint on illustrated books.

Words per chapter, which matters more

Total length is a consequence; chapter length is the thing you actually control and the thing readers feel. A chapter that runs 1,200 to 2,000 words in non-fiction, or 2,000 to 3,500 in fiction, can be read in a sitting. Much shorter and the book feels choppy; much longer and people stop mid-chapter and do not come back.

The useful discipline is to hold chapters roughly even. A book whose chapters run 800, 3,000, 1,100 and 4,200 words reads as disorganised even when the content is good, because the reader cannot predict what a chapter costs them.

A sanity check before you publish

  • Is the total inside the band for its kind, or deliberately outside it and labelled?
  • Are the chapters roughly even, within about 40% of each other?
  • For a paperback, what does this page count cost to print, and does the price you want still leave a royalty?
  • Could you cut 10% without losing anything? The answer is almost always yes, and the book is almost always better for it.

Neubook plans to a target length per kind and shows the word count against it while you write, so a thin chapter or a picture book at twice its length is obvious before you publish.

Common questions

How many words is a typical novel?

Between 70,000 and 100,000 for most adult fiction. Under 50,000 is a novella and is usually priced and marketed as one; over 120,000 is a hard sell for a first book, both to agents and to print economics.

How long should a non-fiction guide be?

Between 25,000 and 45,000 words for a practical how-to, and 40,000 to 60,000 for a self-help book that argues a thesis. The right length is the one that covers the task, not a target you set in advance.

Is a longer book better?

No, and for a paperback it is actively worse. Printing is charged per page, so every extra page comes out of your royalty on every copy sold. A tight 30,000-word guide earns more per copy than a padded 60,000-word one and gets better reviews.

How many words is a picture book?

Between 500 and 1,000 words for ages 4 to 8, spread across about fourteen double-page spreads. The constraint is the 32-page printed format, not the story.

What is the minimum length for a paperback?

Amazon requires at least 24 pages, and the page count must be even. In practice a book under about 60 pages looks thin on a shelf and is hard to price above the printing cost.
