Self-publishing by the numbers, 2026
Millions of new titles a year, a market growing far faster than traditional publishing, and a median author income that is real but modest. The figures, where they come from, and the arithmetic for your first book.
Volume
Bowker's ISBN data, as compiled by ISBNdb and others, puts self-published titles with ISBNs at more than 3.5 million in 2025, up roughly 39% on the year, and outnumbering traditionally published titles in the United States by more than five to one. Those figures undercount, because most Kindle-only ebooks never get an ISBN. The honest reading is that the shelf is very crowded and getting more so, which is the case for writing a specific book for a specific reader rather than a general one.

Treat every market-size number with suspicion: the two most-cited estimates of the global ebook market differ by more than three times, because they define "ebook" differently. The trends are consistent even where the totals are not.
The arithmetic for a first book
Take a 30,000-word nonfiction ebook priced at $4.99 on Kindle at the 70% royalty tier. After delivery costs you keep roughly $3.40 a copy. To earn back a $200 cover and a $500 edit you need about 200 sales. Most first books by unknown authors sell fewer than that in their first year. The median income above is earned by authors with several books and a mailing list, not by a debut.
That is not an argument against writing the book. It is an argument for two things:
- Keep the production cost close to zero. If the book costs you a weekend and a few dollars, 40 sales is a win and 400 is a business.
- Write it for a purpose beyond royalties. A lead magnet that fills a list, a study guide for your congregation, a workbook for your course, a memoir for your family. The book pays in ways the KDP dashboard does not show.
Where the growth is
Kindle Unlimited pages read keep climbing, as the fund figures show, and payouts favour longer books that readers finish. Non-English markets grow faster than English ones; Amazon's Indian storefront and regional-language readers on Google Play Books are underserved. Print-on-demand paperbacks, not ebooks, are where many nonfiction indies now earn most, because a $14.99 paperback nets more than a $4.99 ebook.
