How to write a lead magnet ebook people finish
The best lead magnet is short, solves one problem the reader has this week, and sounds like the person they will be buying from. Here is the method, including where AI helps and where it hurts.
Pick the problem, not the topic
"A guide to email marketing" is a topic. "Write your first welcome sequence in one evening" is a problem with a finish line. The finish line is what makes someone hand over an address and, more importantly, open the file. Choose a problem that sits one step before the thing you sell, so the natural next question after the last page is your offer.
Keep it short
Fifteen to thirty pages. Nobody reads a 120-page free PDF, and a long one signals that you cannot prioritise. Noy and Zhang's productivity experiment, published in Science, showed that AI's biggest gains are on exactly this length of professional writing: a draft in minutes, quality up after a human edit.
Structure that holds
- One-page promise. What the reader will have when they finish, in their words.
- The mistake everyone makes. Establish that you have seen the problem up close.
- Three to five steps. Each with an example from your own work, a checklist, and the one thing to avoid.
- A worked example start to finish. This is the chapter people screenshot.
- What next. The honest description of where they will get stuck, and how you help with that.
Where AI helps and where it hurts
It helps with the draft, the structure and the tidy-up. It hurts when it supplies the examples, because it will invent plausible generic ones, and generic examples are the thing that makes a lead magnet feel like every other lead magnet. The homogenisation research is about exactly this. So the rule: every example, number, screenshot and story comes from you, given to the tool before it writes. Neubook Write asks two interview questions for this reason, and the answers become the spine of the book.
Editing for voice in an hour
- Read the introduction aloud and rewrite it as you would say it to a client on a call.
- Delete every sentence that tells the reader something is "important" or "crucial". Show why instead.
- Run a chapter through the tells checker and fix the reversals and triads it flags.
- Add one sentence of doubt or failure per chapter. Perfection reads as a brochure.
The landing page and the mechanics
The PDF itself will not rank; the page that describes it might. Give it a real title, a paragraph on who it is for, a bullet list of what is inside, a screenshot of a page, and one form field. Google's AI content position favours exactly this kind of specific, authored page. Deliver the file by email, not by direct download, so the address is verified. Follow with three emails over a week: the file, the worked example expanded, and the offer.
Formats
PDF for the download, because it opens everywhere and keeps your layout. EPUB as a second link for phone readers. If the book is good, a Kindle edition at $2.99 turns the lead magnet into a small paid channel and lends it credibility on your site.
Lead magnet in an afternoon. Choose the lead magnet kind, answer two questions about your reader and your method, approve the outline, and export PDF, EPUB and DOCX with your cover.
